Overview

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is a project focused role, performing mechanical and structural analysis on custom machinery and structures in a variety of sub-markets as part of the entertainment industry.  This critical role in the design and engineering process drives innovation and problem-solving utilizing engineering principles and practices. 

Responsibilities

  • Design and engineer custom solutions to challenging engineering problems meeting specific requirements of clients, local jurisdictions, or applicable standards and codes
  • Understand the underlying physics of complex problems and carry out calculations to analyze problems and validate solutions
  • Develop schematic concepts, studies and layouts to validate solutions
  • Sketch concepts to communicate ideas and solutions in a collaborative environment
  • Study, model, and analyze full featured designs utilizing hand calculations, custom built tools, and analysis software
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis results to project design teams aiding in the development and execution of projects
  • Mentor less experienced design engineers cultivating technical growth across the department
  • Collaborate with all departments in a design and manufacturing environment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics required
  • 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience
  • 5+ year of machine design experience
  • Thorough understanding of first principles and experience of applying these to real-world applications
  • Exceptional analytical and numerical competency for justifying designs by calculation
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering science and practice (power transmission analysis and design, exact constraint design, materials science, stress analysis, mechanical connection engineering, dynamic analysis, fatigue analysis)
  • Strong knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles and ANSYS Mechanical or equivalent FEA tool
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as take personal responsibility and work with minimal supervision
  • Wide range of experience in engineering design and project delivery in a hands-on manufacturing environment
  • Attention to detail and an ability to see the wider context of project work
  • Flair for translating creative concepts into technically engineered solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, able to liaise with others at all levels in the company and with customers and suppliers
  • Strong work ethic and focus on delivery
  • Willingness to extended working hours when necessary to meet project deadlines
  • Willingness to travel (domestic and international), less than 10%

 

     Preferred:

 

  • Professional Engineering License
  • Working knowledge of structural engineering science and practice (stress & deflection of structures, design for global environmental conditions)
  • Familiarity with published engineering design codes and standards including AISC, ADM, ASCE 7, IBC and others
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD 3D or equivalent modeling tool
  • Working knowledge of Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA or equivalent parametric modeling tool
  • Working knowledge of RISA-3D or equivalent beam element analysis tool
  • Working knowledge of Adams or equivalent multibody dynamics simulation tool
  • Exposure to both manufacturing and construction-industry practices, including factory and site work
  • An aptitude for hands-on engineering demonstrated through work or personal activities
  • Working knowledge of hydraulics or pneumatics
  • Working knowledge of composites
  • Interest in the performing arts or live event
